Why the Memory Joggers System is So Successful

I’m Donnalyn Yates and I’ve been a teacher for many years.  Back in 1992 while teaching 3rd grade, I realized there had to be a better way to teach students to memorize multiplication & division facts, and addition & subtraction facts. Boring flash cards were NOT working! I had always been interested in the brain and how it retains and recalls information. (learn more about memory and how it works here)

I developed the Memory Joggers Multiplication & Division System by making up stories with rhymes, associations and pictures to stimulate a child’s memory.  After trying it out in my classroom, I was amazed at the quick results.

At the time I was teaching a class of 32 students their multiplication and division facts from 0 – 9.  Several had ADHD or Dyslexia and there were also many ESL students in the class. I knew I had an idea worth trying, so I began using this method with my class.  After only 8 weeks, their test scores showed that 97% of the students knew all the facts — not only multiplication but division as well. I was amazed, and knew I was on to something.

My students were memorizing both the multiplication and division facts, and having fun at the same time!  Soon other teachers and parents were asking for the system and Memory Joggers company was born!

The Addition/Subtraction system came next.  One day, while observing children playing a clapping game and saying nonsensical rhymes, I realized how this game could be used for memorizing add/subtract facts.  Short rhymes along with pictures and the clapping, gave children a memory technique that was fun and successful!
